White Men Can’t Jump (1992)
“White Men Can’t Jump” premiered in 1992. It’s a comedy starring Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes as basketball hustlers. This basketball movie was written and directed by Ron Shelton. The movie pits stereotypes against stereotypes and it can make everyone laughing. The director of the film really knows how to make interesting sports movies so this one became one of the best comedies about sports and about basketball especially. So what we can see in “White Men Can’t Jump”? Two young men use national stereotypes to drag others in the courts. So one of them Billy Hoyle (Harrelson) is a former basketball player. He tells everybody that he couldn’t reach a success because of being “white” man. He thinks that only African-Americans are able to become good and famous players.
But when they lose the game it occurs that Sidney made it on propose to let his friends get $1,700.
The second talented but arrogant player is Sidney Deane (Wesley Snipes). He was humiliated by Billy twice so he doesn’t like him. But there is the way how Billy can be useful for Sidney.
Billy and his girlfriend are in hiding from the mobsters. They lose a lot of money in gamble. Gloria dreams of becoming a contestant on the TV show “Jeopardy”!
And Sidney’s dream is to buy a new big house for his family.
So Billy and Sidney become partners. They start to hustle other players for money. But when they lose the game it occurs that Sidney made it on propose to let his friends get $1,700. Gloria is very upset that Billy lost his money again. She tells him on the way home: “Sometimes when you win, you really lose. And sometimes when you lose, you really win. And sometimes when you win or lose, you actually tie and sometimes when you tie, you actually win or lose. Winning or losing is all one organic globule, from which one extracts what one needs.”
After all those things the guys win the game and get $5,000, but Billy loses his part and Gloria leaves him.
Gloria dreams to lead the TV program. To bring Gloria back Billy asks one of his friends who works at the TV studio to invite her there. She gets the job and the first program where she stars earns a lot of money. She comes back to Billy.
Billy and Sidney become partners again and Billy takes a risk to play for money again. He wins that game but his girlfriend leaves him again because of that. So she was right talking about losses and wins….
