The Converse Blog: On the naming of the new “Balls Technology”, some people might find the name a little risqué. How did the name for the technology come about and was it close to being named something else?

DiTullo: That’s a pretty good story. Personally, I love macaroni and cheese because macaroni and cheese is macaroni and cheese, right? There’s just something about when you just name something what it is that, to me, it’s just honest and I love that. So, we had been calling it Balls internally all along, all of us are like 99% sure that that was going to change. We were like ’This’ll never stick.’ But that’s what they are, they’re balls, so that’s what we had called it. We’ve probably had like 250 to 300 meetings on what we should name it. We just never came up with anything better than Balls. Yeah, there’s a lot of tongue-in-cheek fun analogies that you can make but also it kind of explains what it does really easily. Coming from a big company, I think showing that we can have a little bit of fun … not a bad thing. At the end of the day, me and my team, we get paid to draw shoes all day. We have a really fun job. Sometimes all these technical benefits that we’re all really working hard to provide just come off so serious. The game of basketball is a game and it’s a super fun game. I think Balls just kind of connects to that.

TCB: Your original Weapon Evo sketches from 2007 had sketches featuring a full-length hit of the Converse Balls Technology. Would that be something that we could expect in future releases?

DiTullo: We designed these technologies to be scaled. So, we wanted to be able to offer it in different packages or different price points. You’ll definitely be seeing a lot of variations.

TCB: The patent pending number on the outsole of the Weapon Evo refers to the design making use of the spheres and the Converse Helium logo. Could Balls Technology evolve to include helium in the same way that there’s Nike Shox with air in it now?

DiTullo: Well, I wouldn’t be able to comment on anything like that but the spherical patent is a patent that Converse has held for a long time, and if it’s not the strongest patent in the marketplace, it’s one of them. I was researching through our patent documents and I was like ’Yeah, we should just do something with this thing because it’s just sitting here and it’s kind of a little gold mine of an idea here.’ I’m not one of the best designers, I don’t think. I don’t put myself in the top list. I think what I’m really good at is finding those nuggets, those things that maybe someone else got frustrated with or couldn’t figure out all the way, and dusting it off and being like ’Wait a second, there’s something here.’ I think if you look at the Weapon Evo, it’s kind of got patent 360 with the Weapon-inspired upper and then the Balls Technology in the chassis.

TCB: Is the Weapon Evo the most important release for Converse since the first Wade shoe?

DiTullo: As a designer, I’m very proud of it and I’m often my own worst critic. I’m mean, typically, I’m never happy with my work. I’m always more focused on what’s on the drawing board right now. When I look at my work, I look at what I could’ve done better, what I want to improve on.

Molly: Yes, it is an important shoe launch for us this fall for a number of different reasons. Really it’s the first team shoe that Converse is putting out with the new Star Chevron logo on it, so for us alone with that new logo, it’s a huge deal for us. So everybody internally is really excited about this shoe, from the work that Michael’s done over the past 2 years with it, to putting it out in the marketplace today. Dwyane Wade or not, this was going to be an important shoe for us, just alone from bringing back the Star Chevron mark.

DiTullo: I was super psyched to work with the mark. For me, that’s Converse basketball.

TCB: So the talks about bringing back the Star Chevron logo were around 2007 then?

DiTullo: Yeah, when we started Evo. It was killing us just to leave it off stuff. Let’s just focus on the Evo and get it out there. Patience pays off.

TCB: Is there anything in the works about maybe having an increased presence for Converse in the NBA or NCAA this season? People are watching Converse to see what’s going to happen in the near future.

Molly: We’re having conversations about adding more ambassadors for basketball and we’re really going to try and take our time and work with people who really are Converse athletes and people that are willing take risks and do something differently. As a brand we always says we want to disrupt the status quo. So we’re really just taking our time and pushing the reset on who our ambassadors are and taking a look at that. Probably spending the next few months having conversations and doing some investigative work and seeing who might be available and what makes sense for us as a brand.

Kyle Korver and Alando Tucker are going to battle all year for the hottest colorway.

Disclaimer: These are my views and opinions and should not be taken as any potential news or rumors.

If you’ve been reading my blog then you know that I am not content with the current Converse. I’ve been searching for a more diverse Converse for years now. My desire to see Converse in more performance categories than just Basketball and Skateboarding led me to today’s post. So let me simply ask a question, what if Converse signed Michael Vick? What really got me thinking about this was a recent post over at SoleCollector. So if you haven’t read their article go read it real quick and then come back over here…or just click over there when you’re done here, that’s your call.

So my gears started to turn and I thought that it would be nice to see what a Converse Football cleat would look like today. So I took a picture of the Converse Artillery basketball shoe that is supposed to be releasing soon, I hope, and asked for a huge favor from the Internet’s BP the Owner. BP is a photoshop wizard of the highest level, click over and check out some of his work. I asked him to work up a cleated version of the Artillery in Eagles colorways and he came through big time.

Currently there are only a handful of companies producing performance football cleats, Nike, Reebok, Under Armor, Adidas, New Balance, Pony, and perhaps Starter with Tony Romo. Basically what I am saying is that there is room for Converse.

There would be a large risk in signing Vick, but it’s not like their football/training sales can go any lower considering they don’t make any football/training products anyway. Signing Vick could jump start Converse in the Football and Training categories. It could also make huge strides in gaining the respect of other NFL players and Vick’s fans. Of course the flip side is also true, signing Vick could drive others away from the brand. Regardless, any company associated with Vick will have to work hard with him and the Eagles to help and try to correct his previous wrongs.

However, is a long shot because this would greatly disrupt the current status quo at Converse. Also, Nike seems determined to push Converse towards a fashion only brand. And if they really wanted to enter the football and training markets there are probably much better ways to do that…but it sure would be fun. I’m not trying to be negative, but sometimes it’s fun to just dream about what could be.

Recently Converse released a special make up the All Stars featuring a stencil spray paint design. You can find all three of these shoes at Converse.com, which is where I got these pictures from. One of the aspects of this release that I really enjoy is that it’s not over the top. Besides the ankle patch placement there a few other areas that are hit with the spray paint. It’s also nice that you can wear this without having to go out and buy something to match it, as all three versions come in either white/black/red or Black/white/red colorways. However, the best part of this release is in the ox version. This is one of the few, if not the only, All Star ox that features the iconic Chuck Taylor ankle patch.

A few years ago Converse had a line of trail shoes going by the name of Converse ECO. I actually had a pair of these in a different colorway. These shoes were build tough, and wore them while helping to build an outdoor classroom in my high school biology class. In fact I would still probably be able to wear them had I not been an idiot and tried to put them on while they were still tied. I know we all do it, but we really shouldn’t. I messed up the heel cap and now sometime sharp sticks out and attacks my heel. Oh well, I am still holding out hope to find a pair on the eBay someday.

Well that’s it for today, I am off on spring break next week but I’ll try my best to post something. Thanks for checking out the blog! Enjoy the Final Four.

Crazy day here in Kentucky. A strong line of thunderstorms just swept across the state like a firm pimp slap. I watched it rain in 3 different directions. Then we lost power, then the power came on and then the TV went out. Oh, and I couldn’t find our battery radio or our War of the Worlds crank radio, thank you Tom Cruise. Needless to say it was pretty crazy. Speaking of crazy, these new Converse Weapon 86’s are just that. You can them in a very nice Blue/Orange Knicks inspired colorway.

Sorry for the late post today, I had to keep up with some crazy 5th graders. Besides the F’bomb and sneaky cell phone use, it was a rather pleasant day all around. Thanks for checking out the blog, enjoy the weather where ever you are!

Happy 4th of July, which is without question the most important American Holiday. The only problem is, July 2nd 1776 is the actual day that the Continental Congress actually voted for independence. The written Declaration of Independence was dated July 4 but wasn’t actually signed until August 2. Fifty-six delegates eventually signed the document, although all were not present on that day in August. By the way, I put in an application for a social studies teaching position yesterday. I don’t know what that means for the blog, maybe I’ll just have to post at night. Anyway….today’s flashback is all about the Red, White, and Blue!

I am not sure the shoe(s) that Michael Jordan is wearing hear, but I do know that they have a Chevron and they do have Star and that makes them Converse. I can’t think of shoe brand that is any more American than Converse and I am going to wear my pair of Chucks today, the ones with the American flag on them.

I am flying out to Orlando tomorrow for a week of vacation and I can’t wait. I am going to hit up at least two Converse outlet stores. We’re going to the Tampa Bay Rays game on Sunday and I might try to get to the Converse store outside of Tampa, but we’ll see. This means two things, I probably won’t be able to post any pics from the summer league or give any updates on Rose, Beasley, or any other rookie signings by Converse. I am going to just future post some pictures for the rest of the week, I didn’t really plan ahead enough so you’ll just have to stop in and see what’s up.

A few weeks ago I showed a yet unknown Converse shoe. Since then I’ve found new pictures of a different colorway. I’ve also found out more about the shoe. It’s called the Converse Showtime. These shoes along with other Converse models are featured in the lasted KICKS magazine, published by SLAM Magazine. These shoes are are also for sale over at Converse.com. I am pretty sure that they’re just 65 bucks. One of the best features on The Showtime is the use of the “The First School” Slogan. Anyway here are some more pictures below, thanks for checking out the blog.
